I listed them in rough order of how much I liked them. All those movies are imo very good and suitable for a college paper, but it sort of depends on the class.

If it's for a film or drama class do yourself a big favor and watch DAS BOOT. It's a truly phenomenal film that doesn't get the attention it deserves in the US because it's a WW2 movie that was made in Germany, shot in German, about a Nazi submarine crew. If you don't mind subtitles, this will likely be one of the best movies you'll ever see. If you hate subtitles THE PIANIST is also a fantastic war drama.

If it's for a history class Ken Burns' documentary THE CIVIL WAR is a good choice for a term paper, but it's so long that I wouldn't choose it for a smaller assignment. GLORY is a good choice for a shorter US History paper and THE KILLING FIELDS is a good choice for a World History paper.

For a politics course THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS is a great choice because it's highly relevant to current US Wars and helps explain anti-western sentiment in the Middle East.

The Deer Hunter is fantastic... definitely a mentally exhausting movie.

Perfect for a paper, as it deals a lot with the psychology of soldiers, and not just 100% action
