Savings bonds are so much better than toys. Kids have so many toys already. I started giving my Nephew and niece $50 savings bonds on their birthdays and Christmas. My nephew just turned 18 and has a nice chunk of change.

Forgot to mention when you buy the EE bonds you pay 1/2 the bond price. I paid $50 but they get $100 when the bond matures.

She's one... She has no concept of what she's getting or why .. buy her a box with shiny paper in it and she'll be as happy as if you got her a $500 toy. She wont gather any kind of meaning to till shes 3 or 4

Get her something useful like clothing or the aforementioned savings bond,

Lazy, how about some baby jewelry ie...a gold baby bracelet. That is a keepsake she could possibly one day pass down to her daughter and so forth and so on. Have it engraved. You can get those at a reasonable price and it makes you look good.
