It's one thing for charities to become more transparent but it's another to use the actions of one fraudulent organization to mask the apathy and selfish greed exhibited by someone who uses it as an excuse to do nothing.

If you send money ,do your due diligence prior to sending it .
I never send money.

Sending clothes, canned goods,etc. is a safe way to get your gift directly to where it is needed.

Giving your time to local charities and non profit org. is better still.

The reward you get from that is much greater than anything you get from stroking a check.

There are even business that contact charities to offer "help": They make campaigns to raise funds "for the charitiy", and give them 20% or so of the funds. The rest is to cover the business campaign and profit. Often the charities accept because they are getting free funds, but the donor is screwed.
