    Magic Jack!
Who knows the details of Magic Jack!
Please explain how anyone that could use another home phone [computer only?] would not want this phone ? Win, win situation?

I think it's $20 a year, right? What other fees or problems would you run into?
    Thanks, anyone!

We needed a home phone, we got one a few weeks ago. No complaints yet. Doesn't bog with high internet usage like vonnage did. I think it was 30 the first year and 20 after.

There are other companies like NetTalk that connect to your router/modem so you don't need a computer.

I've had no real issues with MagicJack.

Thanks a lot guys! I believe I'll be buying one this week. No one mentioned any extra fees besides the original cost?

Yes. It is no different than a standard phone jack.

If I borrow wireless from my neighbor, can I still use a magic jack?

More importantly, people still use a home phone?

I understand what you're saying, but don't think big brother can't listen in on a landline or cell. I don't think a computer is any different.

I wouldn't suggest using MagicJack on a weak, shared wireless connection.

It isn't going to replace your cell phone or anything, but to make free long distance calls in North America it's better than any price plan offered by phone companies.

You technically don't. The MagicJack runs a program off your computer through a USB telephone jack. The thing is you can actually forward your MagicJack to your cell phone number and not use a computer at all. So, for instance say you live in Canada but have a lot of US friends/family/business. You could buy MagicJack, get an American phone number so it's a local call for your friends/family/business associates in the US to call, but it would be forwarded to your Canadian line.

They would think you are in America while you're in Canada and not having them pay long distance.

If you want to call them you have to use the MagicJack USB connection to a computer though. This is great if you want to make a lot of calls to the US or if you plan on traveling. I used the MagicJack to make calls back to Canada when I was visiting Chile. I found the quality more than adequate.

The faster your internet connection the better the quality is.

Thanks guys! I bought one today and have yet to test it thoroughly.

I'll let any interested people know tomorrow or by Thursday.

One snag [ but not common], I cannot use my own area code. Weird, but this IS Indiana!

Okay, so far this baby is working perfect. One snag, though not a biggie; any calls in or out will have to use the full 11 digits to work. And, most likely, incoming calls will be long distance for them. Home calls will still be free. There are also some free options, like call-id, etc.
Cost is $40 for first year. Thereafter, $ 20 a year. This will be "all" of the TOTAL COSTS!

Otherwise, this is pure magic so far!

had mine for over a year and love it. there are some settings you might have to tweak if you are getting an echo back on your end. but i've had no probs and would recommend it if you have a good computer and a good internet connection
