Sickler & Shari: My first taste of Russian Dressing (Video review)

Ingredients:

• 1/4 cup granulated sugar
• 3 tablespoons water
• 1 cup vegetable oil
• 1/2 cup ketchup
• juice of 1 lemon, 2 to 3 tablespoons
• 1 tablespoon vinegar
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon paprika
• 1 1/2 teaspoons celery seed
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder

Preparation:

In a saucepan, cook sugar and water until it spins a thread, about 230°. Cool syrup. Combine remaining ingredients; add syrup and whisk to blend well. Chill thoroughly.
Makes about 2 cups of Russian dressing for salad.

Stealth, yours is definitely more watery than the Kraft. That's why you poured so much - none of it stayed on top of the salad, it slid off to the bottom of the plate. Plate?! Salad bowl!

I have to agree with the others who mentioned it - although you somewhat compromise the taste, I always substitute veg oil out for either homemade applesauce when I'm baking or coconut or extra light virgin olive oil. And in the States you don't need to buy the primo stuff- a lot of imported olive oil in the US is purposely made to taste like veg oil to cater to Amercians' bland taste (not my words). So if you're using it purely as a veg oil substitute just go for the cheapest.

Can't wait - either tomorrow or Wednesday I'll have Sickler's box of goodies in my hands! First thing I'll do is cut up some cauliflower, carrots, celery , capsicum and cucumbers and pour capfuls of the dressing over them. You don't need to use a lot of the stuff - it's thick and the taste is so intense that if you mix well enough a little goes a long way.

Catalina is runnier as well but I used it as my second stringer when I was living in the US and couldn't find the Kraft Russian dressing. It's probably the closest thing you'll find to a decent substitute in a bottle though.

The Russian is a bolder taste than Catalina.

Shari, the kit kats will melt in your mouth. The packaging is far superior than when you were here, they are kept fresh.

and for the recipe suggestion, i will perhaps give it a try. i was following recipes off the internet, but if olive oil makes it less runnier that'd be great, was the main complaint of the dressing.
