Does someone joining the army make them more manly?

I was having this argument today with a buddy.

He says that someone becoming a soldier makes them more manly because they're not afraid to die and give up their own life.

I said it's bullshit. You can join the army but it doesn't mean anything. It doesn't make you less or more manly.
