Rutgers Student Believed To Have Committed Suicide After Classmates Allegedly Recorded Him In Gay Sexual Encounter
Looks like it was with another dude, not that it matters. Messed up for them to tape it and push the kid to do this.

HOW? Manslaughter is still somewhat direct act that resulted in murder directly/indirectly. If I called you a liberal and it hurt your feelings would you kill yourself?
THERE WILL BE NO MURDER CHARGES OF ANY KIND.

but then i found out it was a sex act with another man. i can totally understand why he killed himself now.

if im correct murder and suicide are two completely different things...im pretty sure neither the girl or boy will go to jail for murder or manslaughter. probly just the charges for taping/streaming the porn. im not quite sure if they can be charged with "aiding a suicide" if that makes any sense. either way there lives will be ruined because a stupid prank . smh

Nothing major is going to happen to these kids the article explained it all
Invasion of privacy offenses and collecting/transmitting sexual content without consent
Assuming these kids have clean backgrounds, they will probably see at most 1 year in prison
No one knew death would occur from this.. seems like there was no intent as well

PISCATAWAY — A Rutgers University freshman appears to have killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate broadcast live images of the 18-year-old having a sexual encounter with another man on the internet, according to campus and law enforcement sources.
Tyler Clementi, 18, of Ridgewood, is presumed dead after his car, cell phone and computer were found near the George Washington Bridge last week, law enforcement sources said. His wallet was found on the walkway adjacent to the New York-bound lanes. In a statement released this afternoon, Clementi’s family confirmed the suicide and said his body has not been found.
Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton, were charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for setting up a camera in a dorm room on Sept. 19 and using it to view and transmit a live sex scene, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan.
Ravi's Twitter feed on that date referred to seeing his roommate have sex with another man in their room on the Piscataway campus, classmates said.
"Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly's room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay," Ravi said on his Twitter page in a Sept. 19 entry posted at 6:17 p.m.
Two days later, Ravi posted another entry directing his nearly 150 Twitter followers to iChat, an internet messaging service with a live video feed.
"Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it's happening again," Ravi wrote in the Sept. 21 post.
Ravi's Twitter feed has since been taken down. But the entries survived in a cached version of the page still available through Google's search engine this afternoon.
Yearbook photosDharun Ravi and Molly Wei, both Rutgers students, are charged in connection with broadcasting a sexual encounter involving Ravi's roommate Tyler Clementi.
Prosecutors said Ravi and Wei set up a camera on Sept. 19 and broadcast live images of Clementi having a "sexual encounter." Ravi is also accused of trying unsuccessfully to broadcast a second sex scene Sept. 21.
The Clementi family released a statement this afternoon. "Tyler was a fine young man, and a distinguished musician. The family is heartbroken beyond words. They respectfully request that they be given time to grieve their great loss and that their privacy at this painful time be respected by all," it said.
"The family and their representatives are cooperating fully with the ongoing criminal investigations of two Rutgers University students," the statement said.
Clementi was an accomplished violinist who had received a college scholarship from the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra for his musicianship and leadership.
The violinist left a lasting impression with some in the Bergen County town, said Hiro Kagei, 17, who played in the orchestra with the teenager. A solo Clementi played in a concert last year "blew the audience away," he said.
"Now that he’ dead, it’s sad to think we won’t hear something like that anymore," Kagei said.
On the Rutgers campus, classmates described Clementi as quiet. At a mandatory dorm meeting called the day he was reported missing, only three students said they had spoken to Clementi since they moved into the dorm last month, according to students who were at the meeting. Ravi and Wei — who were classmates at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North before enrolling at Rutgers this fall — did not respond to e-mail requests to comment Tuesday. Steve Altman, Ravi’s attorney, also declined to comment.
Ravi surrendered to Rutgers police Tuesday and was released on $25,000 bail, the prosecutor’s office said. Wei surrendered to the campus police Monday and was released on her own recognizance.
Under New Jersey’s invasion-of-privacy laws, it is a fourth degree crime to collect or view images depicting nudity or sexual contact involving another individual without that person’s consent, the prosecutor said. It is a third degree crime to transmit or distribute the images.
If the students are convicted on a third degree offense they could face up to five years in prison each under state law. Conviction on a fourth-degree crime could lead to probation or up to 18 months in prison. PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

I am saying a prayer for Tyler and another for his family. For the parents of this child to have to deal with the loss of their son - that is a horrendous thing on its own. But now to deal with the circumstances around it - it's truly devastating. I really hope the POS that posted the video and "tweeted" about it on his twitter account gets hard time in prison, and the same goes for the cold-hearted girl who was somehow involved as well. To be able to do something like that to ANYONE is beyond me. Not to pull out the race card, but both parties involved probably had seen some kind of discrimination in their 18 yrs on this planet, one being of asian decent, the other indian - you'd think they would have a little tolerance and compassion when it comes to minorities of any nature. Guess not.

Agree. I am black and I have always wondered how other minorities could not tolerate superficial differences. Not to say that being a minority bars you from having an opinion only privy to standard non minorities, but rather to at least "understand". However, this situation is very sad. Just posting anybodies intimate moments when they are least expecting is cruel. But to film an intimate moment that you KNOW will get a certain type of action from a majority type of people is just sinister to say the least. I am straight, I in no way have any problem with how 2 males spend their time nor hate homosexuals, but I don't care to watch 2 males going at it. That is of no value to me. If he has committed suicide, may he rest in peace. It is a cruel cruel world.

What a shame.....my heart goes out to Tylers parents. Kids/young adults in todays electronic age can do so much irreversible damage so quickly. In seconds you can take a picture or video and post it online to upset or destroy anothers persons life and it can't be taken back, here is a perfect case in point.

I just cannot get over what a terrible story this is. I hope the two who did this are severely punished and expelled. Hopefully this will haunt them throughout their lives. My thoughts go out to Tyler's family during this difficult time.

In all honesty, it is hard to prove a crime is committed per motivation by hate. Unless there is an abundance of circumstantial evidence. One could argue that their motivation wasn't based on hate but rather to get an expected reaction from people around the world. Just for laughs. Like my dad used to tell me "you cant say a man is racist based solely on his actions, one must be able to read the heart". Is invasion of privacy a Felony? If so maybe the D.A. can "whip up" some sort of felony murder charge.. Thats if you know what i mean!!

Mr. Youlookdumberthanyoulook -- Thanks for the considered reply. You Dad sounds like an interesting, thoughtful man... "you cant say a man is racist based solely on his actions, one must be able to read the heart". A daunting task indeed... I raised the question to read opinions... I wasn't necessarily stating mine via the question, but thanks again for yours...

Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei will now show up as video-cam-spy-voyeur types on every internet search from now on, regardless of whatever the court determines about them. Good luck getting a job of any responsibility or need for discretion/secrecy from here on out kids.... I suggest dropping out of RU and getting a job at McDonalds making fries now. Live by a sword, die by a sword.

pwayyouknow-- Interesting point, good observation. This is going to be tough to live with, no matter what the final outcome and no matter how bad (or not) those involved feel.

pwayyouknow, I don't think McDonald's would hire them, even their hypocrisy only goes so far. Maybe Singapore is onto something with their caning of criminals. And if Tyler did commit suicide, condolences to the family.

First my thoughts and prayers are with this young man and his family. I am hoping and praying that he just left those things on the bridge and walked to a secluded spot to think things over and get away from it all, before resurfacing and returning to those who love him. I cannot understand how 2 young people who could be so heartless to out someone over the internet like this. Have they no shame? I hope for their sakes this youngster has not taken his life. Hopefully they will not have to live with what they did for the rest of their lives. Every parent should take this story and show it to their child or children. Some Character education is in order by parents and schools.

They should have already been expelled from Rutgers, if Rutgers has any sort of ethical standards for it's students.

This is a tragic story for the victim and his family. I'm ruminating here.... is this now going to be considered a hate crime by some people?

What is lacking here in order to charge murder, manslaughter or assisted suicide is any sort of intent. And while I am unsure of NJ's depraved indifference statute (or criminally negligent homicide for that matter), it would not even be close under NY law.

It's probably a stretch but depending on state law it might not be impossible to charge with involuntary manslaughter (and further classified by some as constructive or 'unlawful act' manslaghter). I would say it's a big stretch but it may be arguable depending on state law and the facts. Highly unlikely though I would think.

Well there is some intent. They certainly seems to have intended to do an unlawful act (broadcast private images depicting nudity) and it's certainly foreseeable that that act would do harm to him. For involuntary manslaughter, it's not necessary to intend or foresee the actual death.
I'm not saying these charges will be brought and I don't know NJ law, but in some jurisdictions this might at least be plausible.
Consider MJ"s doc facing involuntary manslaughter. He didn't mean to kill Michael, no intent. But he died during what may have otherwise been a crime (giving drugs illegally). That can be enough for Inv. Man.

On a side note:
Tyler Clementi was spotted by at least two individuals as as he was standing on the south walk of the bridge, not long before he jumped. He left no note and his body remained missing. Police did discover a body floating in the river, but it has not yet been identified.
What this really means: Tyler Clementi is now no longer, he is living as someone else, and got out of his gambling debts...well played sir.
