Steve, why if a baseball hits the “foul” pole, it’s a “fair” ball?

When baseball was first invented there were no foul (fair) poles, only foul lines.
So when a ball went over the fence the umpires had no reference point to judge if the ball was fair or foul except for the 'foul' lines.
Hence the term 'foul' pole when they were invented. (In the 20's I think)
The umpires before the foul poles were invented judged whether it was a home run or not on where the ball landed not if it went over the fence.

It should really be called a fair pole if you ask me.
(and I believe you did) lol

    That's a Steven Wright gag.
Steven Wright is the greatest 'deadpan' comic of this generation.
Wright and Bob Newhart (who's still alive and kicking at the age of 90 by the way) are the greatest 'deadpan' comics ever.

    A dog.

I mean who else can poop on the floor and have somebody pick it up for you.
Not only that I could lick my balls in public and that would be socially acceptable.
Plus I could sniff a females butt and not worry about a sexual harassment charge.
The benefits are plentiful, I could call a female dog a bitch and be correct.
    The list is endless.

You may feel like you are invincible when you are in your 20's and 30's but in reality you are not.
Don't take your health for granted, if you party like it's 1999 when you are say 28 years old it will catch up with you when you are say 42.
I am fortunate, I quit partying like it was 1999 a while ago and I am in the best shape of my life right now.
