When baseball was first invented there were no foul (fair) poles, only foul lines. Originally Posted by Bostongambler

Hence the term 'foul' pole when they were invented. (In the 20's I think)
The umpires before the foul poles were invented judged whether it was a home run or not on where the ball landed not if it went over the fence.
It should really be called a fair pole if you ask me.
