    (Beatles) Opinion: Paul > John
I know this is ancient history. It's art, so people have their own opinion.

Of course, John's demise was tragic. That goes without saying.

I've studied this enough. I have an opinion that Paul > John. Paul was CERTAINLY more likable than John.

    1) John was about two years older than Paul.
...Ringo was about John's age. George was about Paul's age.
...Maybe a big brother sentiment. Thought John's ego was a problem.

    2) John seemingly took himself too seriously.
...Paul was more at ease. Paul seemingly handled stardom better.

    3) The Yoko Ono thing.
...Yoko was John's girl. That's cool.
...John brought Yoko right into the recording studio. Not cool.

Just my opinion. I know it's an eternity ago. John rubbed me the wrong way.

Paul remembers watching Saturday Night Live with John Lennon at the Dakota when Lorne Michaels offered $3,000 for the Beatles to reunite. #thebeatles #paulmccartney

*There's this story about Lorne Michaels jokingly offering $$ for a Beatles reunion:
...Story is that PAUL wanted to do it. They were just down the road.
...JOHN balked and didn't want to. Would have been the coolest impromptu reunion ever.

John was radicalized against the establishment which he himself did nothing (so to speak) to help fix. Intense guy. Too Intense for me.

Should have enjoyed his success as the other did. He should have ''imagined'' living life for today and not for ideals he could not accomplish.

        *Good comment, stew:
        1) Like you say, guy was successful. Would have been nice for him to enjoy it more.
        2) Paul said that there really was competition on the song-writing/singing within the group. Paul said that John complimented him maybe ONCE for doing a good job.
        3) One image I have of John was his appearance on MNF. John laughed and said that "Football made Rock Concerts look like tea-parties." Not long after that Howard Cosell would announce John's passing on-air.

Howard Cosell was in a class of his own. Young people missed a good one. Brought many laughs with him also.

Spot-on, slew. Howard was truly one-of-a-kind:

            1) Liked, and also un-liked. Bob Costas referenced a poll that showed Howard actually won BOTH awards for MOST LOVED and MOST HATED sports-caster in the same year!
            2) Was a great foil for Muhammed Ali. Played off the multi-syllable words (like truculent). ALI: "If that's good, that's me."
            3) There's a longer clip of the MNF news release. I know that Frank/Howard got the news update at the TV timeout. They discussed on how to handle it, w/ the game on the line. Howard was correct in treating it in that manner. Even now, it's very memorable.

I do remember when Ali would break Howards balls by telling him ''if it wasn't for me (ali) you (howard) would have no career. Ali told Howard '' I made you famous '' and Howard would just laugh...

One night on Monday Night Football Howard was totally blitzed and was gone before halftime. He was slurring and making no sense. But it was fun in those days. Nothing like today..

Yeah, slew. I read a few books from some years back:
                1) Yes, Howard sometimes hit the bottle. And he was on-air while hammered.
                2) Howard had a great inter-play w/ Don Meredith. They were polar-opposites. Howard would say "So continues the education of one Don Meredith."
                3) Back on point #1, Meredith led into a game at Denver one time and said "We're here at Mile High. And so am I."

                  Great thread Chucky.
Lots of solid comments throughout. Not a Beatles story , a Cosell story
I had one interaction with Howard. Had a horse in on Preakness day 1977? Or 78? and had Willie Shoemaker riding my horse. i was 2-5 in the paddock . Only had to tell Shoe one thing to be sure and not do with the horse. F’in Howard grabs Shoe before he gets to my stall and won’t stop interviewing him. Shoe was too nice and kept talking to him. Big tall jackass was as rude as I ever saw. I’m forced to give Shoe a leg up late, never get the chance to tell him the one thing NOT to do . He did it. Horse ran 5th out of 6 at 2-5. Had won two in a row before that day and if memory serves he won the next two. But he got smoked that day with Shoemaker on him and Howard screwed me out of a win picture with Willie Shoemaker on Preakness day. Think I was about 22-23 years old. As a result I HATE Howard Cosell. Always liked him until that day. But he was a real Dick in those moments. That horses name was “Go Bet”.

Great story, str. Yes, Howard had a big ego.

Al Michaels and Bob Costas have told a few Howard stories:
*Costas was the young broadcaster. Told Cosell that he should be admired as the veteran in the field. But his ego would never allow him to do that.
*Michaels was in a similar role. Guy on the rise. He had some funny stories on Howard at full-stretch in his persona.

Here's the clip from six years later in 1980. The MIA/NewEng game is coming down to the wire. Patriots are setting up for a Game-Winning FG.

But they learn of the John Lennon shooting at the TV time-out. The discussion between Cosell and Gifford is compelling. Howard genuinely didn't know how to handle it. After some coercing from Frank, they decide how to proceed. I have to say that it was done about as well as possible.

They put the game in context and knew the shooting over-shadowed it. Cosell had his moments, but this is great journalism:
