In recent weeks, Donald Trump has appeared to downsize his events, though he often tells the small crowds that there are 50,000 people waiting to get in outside but unable to (there are not). In the past couple of days, Trump has blamed President Biden and Vice President Harris for forcing him to hold events in smaller venues (they did not). Here is a photo from Trump’s event in Erie. Trump seemed to damage his own campaign when he said he hated to pay overtime, before adding, “I shouldn’t say this, but I’d get other people in. I wouldn’t pay.” This is the second time this week Donald Trump has complained about paying workers overtime. Worth noting: eliminating overtime is a key initiative in Project 2025. Trump’s comments on overtime came after a number of strange moments during his speech. As mentioned above, Trump seemed to blame President Joe Biden for his small crowd sizes. Trump suggested his supporters didn’t know what a Marxist was. Trump went on a strange rant about how actors in Hollywood couldn’t play the roles of migrants charged with crimes. Trump repeated his accusation that Kamala Harris lied about working at McDonald’s. He brought it up multiple times during his speech. Trump claimed he “killed” Kamala Harris in their recent debate, claiming he “won by a lot.” Trump said, “we have to let the police do their job.” He added, “if they have to be extraordinarily rough,” before getting side-tracked and claiming people were looting department stores, carrying large appliances like refrigerators on their backs. While discussing theft, Trump appeared to suggest that one violent day, or “one rough hour,” would put an end to theft-related crimes. This sounds quite similar to the plot of the movie The Purge. Trump said Kamala Harris is a “stupid person,” and his supporters responded by chanting, “lock her up.” While discussing the Iowa Caucuses, Trump said he won “that whole primary thing.” Trump said he was only campaigning in Pennsylvania today because “they cheat” and appeared to suggest there was cheating in Philadelphia, Detroit, and Atlanta. While discussing his recent case in Florida involving classified documents, Trump said, “I had every right to have them. It’s called the Presidential Records Act. That’s what they passed it for.” Trump said if Kamala Harris wins, it’s not going to be pleasant for him. While discussing his plan to close the Department of Education, Trump said, “What the hell do you have to lose?” Trump supporters could be seen leaving their seats while Trump was still speaking.

Fact check: To attack Harris, Trump falsely describes new stats on immigrants and homicide

Trump is wildly distorting new statistics on immigration and crime to attack Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump falsely claimed Friday and Saturday that the statistics are specifically about criminal offenders who entered the US during the Biden-Harris administration; in reality, the figures are about offenders who entered the US over multiple decades, including during the Trump administration. And Trump falsely claimed that the statistics are specifically about people who are now living freely in the US; the figures actually include people who are currently in jails and prisons serving criminal sentences.

“Kamala should immediately cancel her News Conference because it was just revealed that 13,000 convicted murderers entered our Country during her three and a half year period as Border Czar,” Trump wrote in one post on Friday, the day Harris visited the southern border in Arizona. Harris “allowed almost 14,000 MURDERERS to freely and openly roam our Country,” Trump wrote in another Friday post. They “roam free to KILL AGAIN,” he wrote, escalating his rhetoric, on Saturday.

Facts First: Trump’s claims are false in two big ways. First, the statistics he was referring to are not specifically about people who entered the country during the Biden-Harris administration. Rather, those statistics are about noncitizens who entered the country under any administration, including Trump’s; were convicted of a crime at some point, usually in the US after their arrival; and are now living in the US while being listed on Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s “non-detained docket” — where some have been listed for years, including while Trump was president, because their country of citizenship won’t let the US deport them back there. Second, that ICE “non-detained” list includes people who are still serving jail and prison sentences for their crimes; they are on the list because they are not being held in immigration detention in particular.

The new statistics, released by ICE in a letter to a Republican congressman this week, said there were 425,431 total convicted criminals on the non-detained docket as of July 21, 2024, including 13,099 people with homicide convictions.

The statistics have been deployed by Trump and various Republican lawmakers and right-wing commentators as alarming evidence of Harris’ supposed mismanagement of immigration policy. But in addition to exaggerating her role on the file — she was never actually “border czar” — much of the chatter has inaccurately described what the statistics show.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, said in a Saturday email: “The data in this letter is being misinterpreted. The data goes back decades; it includes individuals who entered the country over the past 40 years or more, the vast majority of whose custody determination was made long before this Administration. It also includes many who are under the jurisdiction or currently incarcerated by federal, state or local law enforcement partners.”

It’s not clear how many of the 13,099 people with homicide convictions on ICE’s non-detained docket as of July 21 are currently incarcerated in jails and prisons. Regardless, John Sandweg, an attorney who served as acting director of ICE during the Obama administration, said in a Saturday interview that it is “100% false” to say all the homicide offenders on the non-detained docket entered the US during Harris’ vice presidency. Sandweg added: “These are individuals who undoubtedly entered the United States over a long period of time. … A lot of them have probably been on the list for 20 years, where the US has just been unable to deport.”

CNN could not immediately find public statistics on how many people with criminal convictions were on the non-detained docket during Trump’s presidency. But there are public statistics from just before and just after his presidency — and those statistics, which we’ll discuss later in this article, make clear that Trump, too, presided over a non-detained docket that included hundreds of thousands of people with criminal convictions.

Trump’s lies and disinformation during times of crisis continue to endanger American lives, exposing his inability to provide serious leadership.

In the face of Hurricane Helene’s destruction, Donald Trump has once again proven himself to be not just unfit to lead, but an active danger in moments of crisis. His dismissive comments calling it “a little hurricane” on September 27, as reports of widespread death and destruction poured in, are a chilling reminder of how Trump treats every disaster as just another opportunity to feed his own ego. This is the same man who told Americans the COVID-19 pandemic was under control as hundreds of thousands were losing their lives. Now, he’s playing the same dangerous game—this time with the lives of those affected by Hurricane Helene.


Trump’s response to the devastation is nothing short of grotesque. As communities mourn their dead and face unimaginable loss, he offered the kind of hollow, tone-deaf reassurance that only a man devoid of empathy could muster: “You’ll be okay.” It’s the same empty rhetoric he spewed during the pandemic, where he repeatedly downplayed the virus, contradicted medical experts, and refused to take responsibility for the carnage that unfolded under his watch.

Trump on Monday said: “Nobody thought this would be happening, especially now it’s so late in the season for hurricanes.” This sounds awfully similar to his comments on February 27, 2020, when he said regarding COVID, “It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear. And from our shores, we — you know, it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows”
In both situations, people did, in fact, know. Experts had been warning about COVID since at least late 2019. Even before then, Trump had been warned about the effect of future pandemics. Trump ignored these warnings and disregarded the pandemic playbook left by the Obama administration. Trump’s comment that “nobody thought” a hurricane would happen in peak hurricane season would be laughable if it were not so dangerous.


Trump has frequently resorted to one of his favourite forms of disinformation—denying the underlying cause of the crisis altogether. “[Climate change] is one of the great scams of all time,” Trump declared on Sunday, while the storm was ongoing, echoing his years of calling climate change a “hoax.” This cynical dismissal of a scientifically proven threat is eerily reminiscent of his handling of COVID-19, when he repeatedly referred to the pandemic as a “hoax” engineered by his political opponents. In both cases, Trump’s knee-jerk reaction to downplay the crisis and spread lies to his followers has only served to deepen the destruction and prolong the suffering of those affected.


But, true to form, Trump didn’t stop at indifference—he resorted to outright lies. On September 30, he claimed that President Biden and Vice President Harris weren’t helping red states hit by the storm and hadn’t even contacted governors, like Georgia’s Brian Kemp. This was a brazen and malicious lie. Kemp himself debunked Trump’s claims, confirming that Biden had spoken with him the day before and offered additional support. The fact that Trump has the audacity to spread such blatant lies in the middle of a disaster, where lives are hanging in the balance, is a testament to how dangerous his disinformation truly is.


Republican governors, including Kemp, Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin, and South Carolina’s Henry McMaster, have openly praised the Biden administration’s swift and coordinated response. Yet Trump, in his delusion and pathological need for relevance, invents a false reality where Biden is negligent, and only Trump can save the day. It’s the same disinformation playbook he used during COVID-19—twist the facts, blame the other side, and watch chaos ensue. The casualties, of course, are the American people.
What makes this even more appalling is that Trump’s willingness to lie and distort the truth during disasters isn’t just a failure of leadership—it’s a calculated, dangerous tactic that puts lives at risk. We saw it during COVID-19, when his reckless promotion of unproven treatments and refusal to take decisive action led to hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths. Now, during Hurricane Helene, his lies are designed to stoke division, distract from his own ineptitude, and undermine the very relief efforts that are saving lives.
This is not new for Trump. During Hurricane Matthew, North Carolina’s Democratic Governor Roy Cooper tweeted in frustration when Trump’s administration provided less than 1% of the recovery aid requested. Trump has a long history of treating blue states with contempt during crises, and now, he’s attempting to weaponize a natural disaster to sow division, claiming Biden is ignoring Republican states. Even just a couple weeks ago, Trump threatened that if elected, he would not give California federal money to help put out wildfires. The fact that Republican governors themselves are debunking this narrative makes Trump’s deceit even more pathetic.
President Biden, by contrast, has demonstrated exactly the kind of leadership America needs in times of crisis—swift, coordinated action with a focus on facts and compassion. When asked about Trump’s lies, Biden responded with righteous anger: “He’s lying, and the governor told him he was lying. … I don’t care about what he says about me, but I care what he communicates to the people that are in need.” Biden’s fury is well-placed because Trump’s reckless disinformation doesn’t just hurt his political rivals—it actively endangers Americans who need to trust that their government is working for them, not against them.


Crises like Hurricane Helene demand real leadership. They demand clarity, competence, and above all, a commitment to protecting human lives. Trump offers none of these things. Instead, he brings a chaotic mix of narcissism, lies, and gross incompetence to the table, turning every disaster into a stage for his ego.
