My sometimes clear-thinking mind has to wonder about serious Poker-playing?
After playing Auburn over KY., I'm thilnking, "maybe poker would be a better suit, or a better fit, of gambling for me?"

I see where these modern-day Books just seem to have too much of an edge this last few year? And that hateful three-shot, in my opinion, just maybe the culprit that aids these Book to another higher pecrentage of beating these underdog bettors?

So, I may be bored enough to swap gambling sports?
    * The Catch:
How in this modern world of live gambling do you keep these poker games honest? Why would any semi-pro-cheater, not develop secret body lanuages, or spoken words, or any other deceptive stye for cheating at the poker tables?

Say, some naive poker player goes to Las Vegas and sits down at one of the poker tables, a poker-table not much different than 500 games going on each and every weekend in LV.?
Now, if I have a bud playing at the same table, a bud knowing every possible method of cheating by expressing the potential power of each'es poker-hand, or the dead-nuts where you simply cannot lose?
This, after both potential cheaters have studied somewhere very private, for hours upon hours, every emotion, every finger movement, every body-posture a human body is possible of, why not use this "professional method" to beat not only naive players but just about every player in the poker-room? And another thought: You may be the only honest plaer at that table?

That is my serious question: Can any habitual poker player here, fill me in on some details you wish to offer?
Please, no jokes, this is a serious question and I simply do not know how you or me would sit at a table, thinking, or knowing, if this scenario does happen and the consequences of it happening are, you lose and you lose consistently?
Are you good enough to detect something rotten at your routine poker playing?
Thank you for any sound answers.

*I cannot remember a time where I enjoyed losing at anything, be it tiddlywinks or jacks? Losing is the enemy of my soul.

Hmm, no offers from Chucky or any of his Bud's?
Darn it, I never would have guessed. I was hoping to beat those odds of a 100/1, nope lost again.

Abe, I think your comment is Spot-on.

Ask someone about ONLINE Poker. The scams have been noted. Multi-accounts have been discovered. IE, SAME GUY playing multiple accounts at the SAME TABLE.

Most obvious edge would be having more knowledge of the displaced cards. If hand 1 holds 33...and hand 2 holds 3x, probability of hitting your set cut in half, throw that hand away.

In Live poker, you're right. Pooling your $$ w/ buddy, signal situations on when to bail. Properly-timed cough, kick in the leg if you're sitting next to him, etc.

The one time I saw disclosure on this in Live Poker was Phil Hellmuth playing in a big Cash game. He disclosed up front that he was sharing Action w/ Mike Matusow. That was Phil's way of making it an honest game. Not bad, I think he wanted opponents to know where there might be soft-play.

I have played in some Mid-size Cash games. A few years ago, I found out quickly that I wasn't up to snuff.

Big thing about beating Poker is that you need to find a way to beat the rake. The rake is continuous. Join a table with 10*$200. That $2000 is going to $1900 in one hour just based on rake. How do you overcome that? I know some Poker Pros beat the game but it's not ez. Don't forget that you're expected to Tip, too.
Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?

I play here basically to retain the mental ability to remain focused for a set period of time. A kin to 30 pushups a day, but mental exercise. I would not even consider "serious poker" either on line or live. I'm not that skilled and really don't care that much for the game. mtcw.

Abe, I found a link for you to contemplate.

If you think about playing poker seriously, read about the Mike Postle scandal in California. The guy was playing with an Electronic aid. His results were well beyond +3.0 standard deviations to the right.

He was cheating, beyond a shadow of a doubt. He refused to budge. Judge threw out the case:

I'm not 100% sure of what you're asking, but...

Cheating in poker is real, but it's not widespread enough to keep me from playing and winning.

IMO, rather than trying to ferret out specific examples of cheating, the best protection you can give yourself is to not play in a game if you suspect something is up. For example, a couple years ago I suspected there was a 50ish percent chance that 3 regulars were colluding in a local poker room. Instead of trying to specifically figure out what they were up to, I just played at a different local poker room.

Lately I've been playing micro limits online to learn some new (to me) poker variants. If the players in my games are cheating they're god-awful at it because the games are easy to beat.

Thanks for the post. Yes, I can imagine when your money is at stake you must have "eyes and mind, both, wide open."
Another thing, I would not want my rear to go flat as a pancake after sitting at a poker table for 9 straight hours so I would have to join up with a fitness station somewhere.
With the stress and sitting for long hours, Mr Heart will take his cut, too.

Do you regular players think about this possible health hazard, and if so, what's your choice of staying healthy?

Poker rooms and casinos in general are often collections of society's most unhealthy people. IMO addicts, smokers, and the obese don't generally think about the dangers of sitting for extended periods of time.

I'm more or less a health nut, so I don't really fit in (once I got berated for stepping away from the table and eating an apple ). I drink a lot of water, at the table and elsewhere, and I get up and walk around when there's downtime just to "keep the blood flowing." I exercise and have a naturally even temperament, so my main concern about stress and a momentary elevated heart rate is not giving off tells.

The health effects of poker are not all bad, either. There's preliminary evidence that shows regular poker players have a lower risk of developing alzheimers and other forms of dementia (there's some links online if you do a search).

Interesting. Have you ever checked your ancestry to see if you're related to Doc?
Great movie because of Doc. I sill say though, Kirk Douglas had the winning portrayal of Doc.
His best scene was probably where he threw a knife at his gal, "Long-Nose-Kate."
A classic scene, and acting at the highest level for both of them.

He was simply portrayed to be way too reckless and if he was that careless he would never have made it past 30.
My Doc, is calculating and had a killer disposition.

Im a Kirk D fan. He was one of my dads favorite actors so I grew up watching him. Im not a big Val fan but this is by far his best acting in my opinion and makes this movie one of my favorite to watch

Yes, fine entertaining movie. Val was great for a drunken gunslinger.

And his gal, Kate here, played by Jo Van Fleet, is probably in the top 3 of all great actresses?
Their fight scene is also one of the best acting fight action scenes ever to hit the screen, too.
Probably lasts 4 minutes but you are seeing two professions at their best.
It's not fair to lose character actors such as these two.

Okay poker fiends, is this a camera trick or was Kirk this good at card trickery?
