Back then men earned a wage designed to support a family and gad to be functional in the workplace, then the evening was more formal because hat is when the woman got to go out o the home.

Today, with women in the workplace, wages have dropped substantially. Nice clothes are now a luxury. Late dinners and dancing is reserved for the singles (who dress to impress) and the rest of the couples go to Applebee's in the burbs.

Going out is no longer a formal event, it's an excuse to not watch TV

You don't have to pay a huge sum of money for a good suit. People just choose to wear ugly clothes. They are not that cheap either.
