Today, with women in the workplace, wages have dropped substantially. Nice clothes are now a luxury. Late dinners and dancing is reserved for the singles (who dress to impress) and the rest of the couples go to Applebee's in the burbs.

Wearing a suit is more than buying it.

It's dry cleaning it, tailoring it, taking it in/ out depending on waist, finding shirts & ties, etc.

A suit today plus tie and 2 shirts to go w it & belt runs you $450 on the low end. That's 80% of the median weekly income of the average US male.

The same outfit, in 1950 was $25. That's 33% of the median weekly of the US male.

Today's men also have more withheld from their checks, cell phone bills, Cable/ net bills and mandatory health insurance to pay for. Basically...the costs and priorities of living today have priced fashion out of the average males budget.
