All pre-Trump Neocons look great and mainstream in retrospect. Rumsfeld was a brilliant guy. His legacy is tainted by his de-Baathification strategy in Iraq, basically guaranteed turning Iraq from Saddam to an Iranian client state..

I think Bush and Rumsfeld had four choices, probably all bad.

1. Go with Bidens idea of splitting the country into autonomous Sunnistan and Shiitestan ( Kurdistan?). Would have been an initial bloodbath as people resettled ala Bangladesh, but they truly were itching for a fight and perhaps it could work long term. Colonial type borders for sure, but as they say " The Middle East only has two countries ( Iran and Egypt), the rest are just tribes with flags.

2. Leave the Baathists in power, probably without most of Saddam's Tikrit buddies but just get rid of Saddam.

3. Go with de-Baathification, leaving Shiites in power, ceding Iraq to Iran for the foreseeable future.

4. Don't invade

You're right, there's no "winner" there.

The human rights part of this goes under reported thou. The US / UN did build many schools & allow / expand the role of women in the politics as well.

I think, overall, that was a good thing.

To let that area of the world drift further & further behind society in general, whilst sitting the world's oil reserve, was intolerable.

I retired from the Air Force in 2007. I worked with some young enlisted Army guys at the time and I saw how fired up they were in 2003. Young, dumb, and full of c u m. Thats what the politicians and generals like.

Did any of you chicken-hawks actually serve? I thought McCain was insane, but atleast he had the balls to risk his own life over and over unlike Bush2, Cheney, Limbaugh, Ted Nugent, etc etc etc
