Every race can celebrate Juneteenth. It's an American thing to do. We're talking about a huge part of our history here. A core ingredient that makes it the melting pot.

Juneteenth is celebrating the emancipation of slaves, it's not a "race" holiday.

Slavery and the end of slavery affected races around the world. Especially the white man.

Juneteenth marks the US's decisions to do what many others in the world had already done.

While the US did it late, in 1865, the country of Mauritania became the world's last country to abolish slavery when they made slavery a crime in 2007. It affected about 20% of the population, some 3.5 million, especially the Haratin ethnic group.

The black Haratins were slaves to the Arab Berber descendant Moors, the whiter or lighter skinned group.

I'll probably spend it thinking about how fortunate I am, versus how some others aren't or weren't, kind of like Thanksgiving or 9/11, seems like the true spirit of the holiday

That was one of the goals of this thread, to hopefully get some thinking, or at least thinking about things again.

Nothing wrong with having gratitude, having a thanks.

Remember, we're celebrating emancipation, it's a joyous occasion as well.

I sure hope many don't think that making it a US Federal holiday somehow "whitewashes" the history, because now we can all openly celebrate emancipation.

Remember, be thankful, but don't take pity trobin. That would lead to negative outcomes and the need to somehow make reparations.

That's not what Juneteenth is about.

I'm planning a meal, as noted earlier in the thread.
