i learned that there is a lot of fear mongering by governments and media. in comparison, the flu killed 61k last year in the usa. they quarantined measles outbreaks recently and that is basically harmless to a healthy person.

I don't think the media is over hyping it. It's a string of virus that is resistant to modern medicine- that's scary.

I also think Shoka is right and the Chinese media is underreporting figures. There are news stories of mass cremations and 100's of thousands being quarantined.

It is not impractical to see 1 or 2 deviations of this virus be years ahead of western medicine and wipe out 500 million people in a 5 year span. They'd likely all he older to begin with but nevertheless....

Too early to say one way or the other regarding this virus. Considering it was first reported in December, it's likely that the virus is more widespread across the world than being recognized or reported. The optimist in me says there A LOT of people who contracted it and just got mild symptoms, chalking it up as a common cold or flu. That would significantly push down the death rate. I think we'll have a better idea in 2-3 weeks.
