I don't subscribe to the philosophy Minny and Reigle have about minors being able to consent with guys like Epstein and knowing what they're doing. With that said, the vigilante attitudes similar to HUAD and Vinny are what has led to some extremely fuc*ed up sex offender laws in the US that punish one time fuk ups for the rest of their lives that shouldn't be and need to be changed.

Guy I know was 23 and on the dating apps. Meets a girl who claims to be 19. They meet up and start banging. Eventually she confesses that's she's really 16. Unfortunately, he thinks with his dick instead of his brain and continues seeing her. Parents find out, calls cops. He gets a few years probation, but now he's gotta register for the rest of his life as a monster on the sex offender registry and the girl gets off scot free (who I think should've been charged with fraud for falsifying her age in the first place).

Did he fuk up? Absolutely and needed to serve some penance. At the same time, this guy is not someone who stalks playgrounds looking to pick up little girls and shouldn't be on the registry for the rest of his life for a one time fuk up and now can't integrate into society normally. There's people who have committed murder who have a better time blending into society because their face isn't plastered on all of the Megan's law sites along with people like Epstein so John Q Public doesn't distinguish between the two and assumes them to be equally heinous. When you got people on the registry that are there because they pissed in public or were 17 years old and sexting their 16 year old girlfriend, then something's wrong.

However, it's this being "tough on sex crimes" attitude that leads to these laws and registries getting expanded that gets more and more people caught up and ruins their lives forever when it's unnecessary. It also makes it more difficult for law enforcement to do their job because now they technically have to keep an eye on Johnny who took a piss in a park when drunk one night years ago along with the guy who molested his 3 year old niece. Which one would you rather the cops keep an eye on?

I agree we need to protect kids, but we also gotta stop and look in the mirror and realize we should maybe review the laws we have now and consider if we should paint everyone with a broad paint brush. I'm comfortable condemning a guy (or woman) who fuked up once in his 20's with someone in high school and put them on the same list for life with someone who likes to touch toddlers.
