This is probably true. There is not a lot of details out there regarding the incident and I've seen conflicting reports. Driving outside the main population centers of the state Guererro has been sketchy for many years. I've known multiple people held up by bandits down there. You couldn't pay me enough money to drive down there in broad daylight let alone 3:00am.Comment -

Their son also was shot, but survived and suffered a nervous breakdown, the reports say. After he was released from a hospital, he was transported to the resort town of Zihuatanejo, where he gave law enforcement authorities an account of what happened.
When they reportedly failed to stop at the checkpoint, they were ordered to stop, get out of the car, and shot in the head at close range. The shooters then took their car and left.

I took buses back in the day all thru Mexico on surfing adventures with surfing friends in many Mexican beach towns. Never had a problem, only met friends from different Countries and Mexicans. Best times of my life..
I also traveled all thru South America. Beach towns again.. Can't do that today safetly though unless you show you are with a bunch of friends, all look broke and dress not to impress. You can travel then and stay in hostels and cheap motels and probably not get messed with..
You show cash and nice dressed good luck with that in poor areas. It's just like walking in a business suit and brief case thru South Central or the Bronx late at night as a white man. TARGET!!!

I'd say the exception to that is Colombia. They have actually gotten a lot better. That place used to be one of the worst countries in Latin-America. You could easily get kidnapped and held for ransom if you wandered off the beaten track.

While thats still true for some parts of Colombia, its not the narco-State it used to be. They've really come a long way, especially the city of Medellin with their new gondolas....etc.
The only 2 countries in L.A. I refused to go now is Mexico and Venezuela. They are just not safe anymore.
And its too bad aboot VZ because its a beautiful country that used to be one of the hottest tourist destinations until their ultra socialist govt totally ruined the place.

Stay away from poor cities, not rocket science..
