Harry how many times you travel to DR? Been there quite a few times was never told to stay in Resort. Have rented car each time driving no issue. Been to bars / clubs with locals in Bavaro and no problem at all. Use some common sense and you’ll be fine. Stop allowing the media to scare you.

I didn't stay at an all-inclusive joint but was told over and over by people in the know not to travel far away from where we were staying. The US State Dept has DR on heightened travel alert.

Cripes, the other side of the island is Haiti, and you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger hellhole than that place.
