Well....in reference to the CSA one assumes too much. States that originally entered into the Union wouldn't have done so if they didn't think they couldn't get out. All the CSA wanted was a divorce (human rights issues aside as there was slave ownership in both North and South).

I'm guessing its because King controlled a decent sized voting constituency. Whoever had this information could swing elections in the South...and it's right about the time the SE United States shifted from solid Dem to solid Rep....
