These planes have had thousands of flights in the US with no problems. You’re right.

All you do is take the plane off auto pilot when the sensor incorrectly detects a stall. The foreign pilots probably stayed in auto pilot and didn’t know what to do. Thus they had no control of the plane.

This guidance is in the prescribed procedures by Boeing. The pilots were probably not trained properly. Sad.
