I believe it is in the subscribers you get. The more subscribers, the more money. So you need an audience for whatever videos you are doing and then need for them to click the red subscribe button.

YT shares a percentage of click through revenue

The Subs you get help to identify the content creators that have large audiences. I am sure they then stratify the subs into age and income demos and target ads based on that.

There's also affiliate ad revenue and all sorts of other income streams that you can build. Just read Gary Vaynerchuck's books or watch his stuff.
