A new study finds that men who can perform at least 40 push-ups in one attempt are much less likely to suffer from heart disease and other dangerous cardiovascular conditions within the next 10 years.

As noted in the article, it's surprising the push up test was more predictive than the treadmill test.

I wonder if that's pertaining to the constriction of vessels that using large muscles throughout the body creates versus a leg dominate workout which neglects half the body, including those muscles closest to the heart

Seems like a crazy article to me.... I don't trust a lot of those websites...
I do believe everyone should work on their entire body... not just half of it.
Any type of physical exertion that speeds up the heart rate.... should over time..... be 100% beneficial... especially if you're eating a healthy diet. Running... doing push ups.... whatever.

The article specifies that the men in the study were all in professions that required them to be physically active, over 40, and with an avg BMI of 28.7. They don't define what one "attempt" really is - is it keeping a plank for the whole 40 but being able to rest without knees dropping, busting out 40 full push ups with no break? The science behind the science doesn't seem super scientific although my subscription to JAMA expired so I might need to read the actual paper.

you have to take the article in proper context, fellas...it specifically states the men who can do at least 40 push ups in one set are 96% less likely to have heart failure, heart disease, etc. compared to those men who couldn't do at least 10...well duh!...no shit sherlock!...translation: a man in decent health and shape is less likely to have a heart attack or some other kind of heart ailment than an out-of-shape fuk!...
They found that middle-aged men who can log more than 40 push-ups in a single try have a 96% reduced risk of developing the potentially deadly condition and other related ailments, such as heart failure, compared to those who can complete no more than 10 push-ups.

The most surprising part is that there are firemen who can't do 10 pushups.

I can't do pushups anymore due to tendonitis in both arms/elbows. They used to be an integral part of my excercise regimen, but they aggravate my condition.
