James Gandolfini’s Son Michael Gandolfini Cast as Tony Soprano in ‘Sopranos’ Movie

Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Gandolfini, will play the young Tony Soprano in “The Many Saints of Newark,” the prequel movie to the television series “The Sopranos.”

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” Gandolfini said. “I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for ‘The Many Saints of Newark.’”

    More at the link.

Movie takes place during the Newark riots in 1967. Tony Soprano would have been about 8 years old.

I am assuming the movie "starts" in 1967 when he was 8 and proceeds from there, because his kid is 19.

Gonna be a bit weird with a 19 year old playing an 8 year old.

Only scenarios I can think of is either he's gonna play 19-21 y/o Tony having flashbacks about the riots (or being like a narrator a la Goodfellas/Casino) or he'll appear towards the end of the movie in a fast forward after the riots.

Or they could very well forget the timeline used on TV and make him late teens/early 20 y/o Tony during the riots.

That's probably the most likely scenario.
