Was this his unproven defense or did they prove there was a gun at the scene threatening him?

If so that's a mitigating circumstance and this outcome wouldn't have come... my guess is that they couldn't prove a valid threat against him.

being attacked by a bunch of people with bats is more than valid reason to gun it and try to get out of the situation, and even if he perceived that somebody might have a gun or somebody said something that gives you enough reasonable doubt to believe your life is in danger

Also other points matter too. If you touched Heather with a spoon and she got a heart attack, could you be convicted of first degree murder?
