I'm really not sure I could project the stock mkt to be > +2% annually for next two years.
A lot of talk. But mostly smoke.

It's only fake if you don't pull winnings off the table.
Winnings are predictable. Things such as stock buybacks (thou Bernie Sanders trying to outlaw them) and MA activity is well documented in advance speculation.
It's a preference thing. Can you afford to tuck money away and grind out 5-8% per year on average over a 25 year period or can you use that money and your personal skills to make a higher return yourself.
As with everything in life- balance, moderation and common sense should guide your investment appetite whether in stocks, commodities, bonds, real estate, private business, alternative investments or gambling.
The price is set just like an NFL line...there's reasons, values, trends and speculation.

Fats, I'm patient. I don't have knee-jerk reaction. I buy + hold.
Your response is reasonable. The part I don't totally agree with is the 5to8% annual growth. People reach that conclusion, if u go back to pre-Depression times. What about more recent times? The Stock-mkt is often flat for periods as long as 15 years.
I just don't buy that it's an OBVIOUS growth area over time. If you think in terms of Supply + Demand, I often feel like there's too much Demand. I'm not comfortable at all in saying that the Dow Jones and Std/Poor's is going to go UP, going fwd.

The total market value could be flat, but your portfolio should contain equities that pay dividends of 4% or so, a few small cap takeover targets that can explode, and bonds that get you a point so those hedge against general malaise in the markets.... it's a marathon not a sprint for sure.

I love stocks that pay a nice dividend. I just question whether the dividend gets priced into the stock price eventually.

Dividends always get priced into the stock. People are willing to pay more for a yield. If you notice stocks drop by an almost identical percentage as the dividend after the ex-dividend date, that is why.
5-8% is easily doable, even for those that have little knowledge of the stock market. All they have to do is buy a broad market index fund, such as one that tracks the S&P 500, and watch their investment grow almost 10% per annum over the long-term. Key words being long-term.

Bro we need you in the stock thread. jump in, the water is on the warm side
I know there's a sentiment that stocks are an APPRECIATING asset over time. I still that's a retro-spective view. There's a chance this thing bellies up + goes south.

If the largest economies in the world go belly up, you will have bigger problems to worry about than your stocks taking a dive.

The Stock market itself is not a scam..........
The crooked stock broker agencies/agents operating in boiler rooms are the worst..........
If they promise big returns on your investments you better run like Hell!!!!!!!!!!
There are many crooked brokerage firms, agency brokers (Just fancy name for middleman)
,and stockbrokers (just fancy name for salesmen at the level of a used car, tire kicking, salesmen).......
Very easy to become addicted to robbing Peter to pay Paul in the biz.....
The stock market has practically no regulations (meaning bare minimal investor protection)
especially the average Joe, small investor..........
The people(corporations) who wrote these regulation laws through the lawmakers in DC are the people who truly prosper with astronomical gains with OPM..............

Not really a scam. Just venting my frustration.
I'm of the opinion that the stock market is much less of a sure-thing GOING FORWARD than most people would have u believe.

That's for sure. Have you read any Taleb books? The Wall Street "financial advisors" are largely presented as frauds.
How likely are their stock selections to beat the mkt avg? Might as well ask JJGold for financial advice.
