If I read the initial post correctly I think he lives in a city like 150 miles from Mexico City, but that city has a significant foreign and expat presence which he may be part of. The post seemed way too well written to be a 2nd language I thought

Yes, I indeed live in the expat mecca that was recently named Best City in the World by Travel and Leisure. I do just fine, thank you. I doubt some of the people calling me a broke fuk could afford to live here without an actual 9-5 for as long as I have. I appreciate SBR sending the funds today, although since they were sent as a purchase transaction, the money is still on hold with PayPal. Fortunately, after a few follow-up calls to my bank and credit card company, funds were provided and all is well.

I thought I might regret posting this, which I do, but I've got thick enough skin to take it in stride. You know you've f'd up when food stamp recipients like JJ start calling you broke!

Not like a king, no. But it's a much better life than I had being a slave to a job in the States. I work about two hours a day and do whatever I want for the rest of my day. It's not bad.

Well....I def work more than "2 hours a day", so you got me there. But on the flip side...I can goddam sure travel abroad and not worry that if the $300 I was promised is delayed, I won't end up sleeping in an alley somewhere in some 3rd world shithole.

A couple of days delay on a $300 travel voucher and this motherfukker is living a real life version of Locked Up Abroad

What I don't get about the whole story is that most people pay for their whole flight- not just getting to a place. If his ticket was confirmed by SBR how was he stranded on his way home?

I spent some time with my best friend in Bulgaria this summer.

He has owned a hostel there on the Black Sea for 10 years.

It is damn near 3rd world, but beautiful. And laaaaid back.

During this time he has worked 4 months out of the year, and traveled the rest.

For years he called me a slave and said he'd never come back.

He now has two young daughters and is moving back this winter and getting a job at a bank.

For years I thought he was crazy and like all of his family would urge him to move back.

Now I have been there and got a taste of what he has been living, and I envy him.

And although I know it is for the best, I feel kind of bad for him that he is giving it up.

what funds did you have to spend on the trip? How did you check into the hotel without a credit card.

I paid for the entire $715 round trip, left my travel credit card at a bar in Mexico City the day before I left for CR, checked in with my debit card and paid hundreds of dollars in expenses while there, thinking that I'd get the reimbursement Saturday. I never claimed to live a lavish lifestyle. I make less than $25K per year online but still manage to fully fund my Roth IRA each year. My lifestyle is more fulfilling and my quality of life is much greater than when I was making 6 figures selling insurance, but lavish it certainly is not.
