#4Through about 40 I was always around 185, 6' tall and stayed pretty busy hiking and playing basketball and hockey. never had to worry much about eating right. At 45 now I got up to 200 and started eating better and in a month I'm already back down to 188. Starts with the diet. At my age and worn out knees I can't work out enough to overcome bad eating. Eat clean, cut out sugar, keep staying active and workout enough to stay fit and the not only will the pounds drop you will actually be healthier.Comment -

#5I'm close to 40, and I had the same issue. I was never fat, but putting any extra weight on my frame just looked bad.
2 things that changed all that.
1) I cut down my sugar big time. I eat healthy and pretty low-carb already, but there were things that had sneaky amounts of sugar in them (like yogurt) that I gave up completely. Made a big difference, in more than just my weight.
2) I do 20min of cardio right when I wake up. This was the missing link. Don't eat anything, just make it the first thing you do in the morning. I have an elliptical machine I use down at the weight room at my condo complex, and I have Daily Burn on amazon firestick for days like this when the machines are getting repaired. I make sure I get it in 6 days a week. On my cheat day, I do nothing healthy, and it's fantastic.Comment -

#6alcohol, sugar, late-night eating,
those are the reasons men struggle
to lose weight and keep it off.
i have no problems, was 210 in my 30s
now 175 in my late 40s.
get a handle on those things and your weight will shed.
don't eat 3 meals a day either. Heck, I eat 1 meal a day.Comment -

#8I'm almost 41 and I went from 210 to 187 but it took almost 7 months. In my 30's that would have taken two months. I started doing weights again and running 2 miles a day. I just took a protein shake for breakfast, oatmeal and banana for lunch and whatever for dinner I want.Comment -

#946 here. Stay off the sugar, sodium, process foods and msg. You'll be surprised how many foods/seasonings have msg. Don't eat after 7:00pm and walk after you do to burn those calories away. If you snack after 7pm or anytime try fat free foods. Plain popcorn and try plain puffed rice pan fried with a lil no salt butter. Go organic when you can. You don't have to cut off the stuff you eat but your better off cooking it yourself. If you like burgers try ground turkey. Make your own sauce and dough for homemade pizza. I was at 237 6'0" now down to 203 in 4 months. Keep a record of your weight every time you weigh yourself and stay dedicated. Good Luck!!!Comment -

#10Good ideas from smokenjoke. Don't try to change too much too fast. Start with water, drink a lot of water and cut out any soft drinks or sugary drinks. Pizza? Use a low carb tortilla as a crust. Juicing has saved me, A lot of nutrients and I'm not having to eat a lot of vegetables. Find healthier alternatives and incorporate them into your diet, soon enough you'll notice the difference in your weight and how you feel.Comment -

Yeah Mike!!! Pizza!!! Lot of pizza places use a lot of salt/sugar in the sauce and the dough for flavor. Making your own, you can substitute that sodium/sugar with good and healthy veggies like fresn oregano/basil, real olive oil and incorporate it into the dough/sauce or anything for that matter. Like a homemade pesto. Put it into everything!!! Better tasting and way healthier. Also try growing your own herb garden or a garden as well. One thing for sure is that you have to stop eating processed foods and stop eating in fast foods or chain restaurants for the start and cook healthier for yourself and walk and stay active. Walk after you eat and everyday you do walk a extra block each day you do. I started at 1.5 and I'm up to 3 miles like it's no problem. From 5000 steps now I'm up to 20000 steps when I can. Stay dedicated to what works for you and you'll want it like it was an addiction. Thx Mike. Keep us posted Grassy!!!

#13I posted this over in the "Fly Me" thread...I'm 46, and have lost 35 lbs. in the last 4.5 months...I was 220, now down to 185!...excellent advice from everyone in this thread...what worked for me was cutting and reducing portions...three very small - medium meals a day...cut out all sugars, high fructose corn syrup, fats, alcohol, sodium, etc...and of'course no more junk food...my diet is mainly high protein & low carbs...99% of the time I drink only water...have my morning coffee and the occasional iced tea....I walk about 2 miles everyday...but the key factor for us men is to keep your total calorie intake well under 2,000 a day...if you do this and some kind of cardio, the pounds will come right off...take from someone who's been there, done that!...Comment -

#14Damn, going on 30 and weigh more than all of you old bastards. I don't even eat, unless it's junk I can buy for cheap and toss in the microwave. Think the last time I was under 200 was HS. Granted, I'm 6'2 and rarely move, while drinking and chasing it with sugary, sodium filled drinks. That might do it. Too much water weight...I mean muscle.Comment -

#16After college I put on some weight was never obese but got to 222 at 5' 10". Started a walk/weight train program. But, I walked serious distances. I guarantee you if you walk at a decent pace, you can't walk leisurely you will eventually lose one ton of weight. I hardly changed my eating habits but weight trained three days a week and some weeks walked every day. It was nothing for me to walk 6 to 8 miles.
When you add muscle mass that will also help with weight loss. Some weeks you might not see it on the scale but you will see it in the mirror and with your body measurements. Stay hydrated, walk at a good pace as far as you can, just cut down on calories a little that is all that is needed. Believe me you will start losing so much fat/weight you will start worrying that you are ill.
I got down to 185 and 34 inch waist with good muscle tone. It works if you are serious about it.Comment -
