Hey there Mikel45, among all the tripe, a couple of people answered your question, and I will try to add a little. There is quite a bit of difference in how our union was constructed originally and how it is now. The country was built with a centralized federal government, but each individual state had significant power, but although that still holds true in concept (i.e., our constitution) it isn't the case in reality. As someone mentioned, states can make their own laws as long as they don't supercede the federal constitution, but it's rather limited as the federal government will do such things as withhold federal funding and the like. In the 1860s we fought a civil war here, and most people focus on one aspect of it (slavery) but it was about so much more than that; namely, states' rights. The rights of the individual states were nearly obliterated, and have continued to dwindle in the century + since the Civil War when the union military defeated the separatists. I don't know how much interest you have in this over there in Europe, but if you ever read early United States literature you will come across completely different grammar when reading about the United States, e.g. "The United States are at war" as opposed to how it would be said now "The United States is at war". Each state was much more of it's own entity in the early days of the country, but in practice--not so much now.
And hey, Mikel45--this thread is going to go in a million different directions, but I suspect there are a few of us who would relish an intelligent conversation on the subject, so you will have to sift through it. But I have the same question that bozeman asked: Why are you asking--just out of curiousity?
