The US police will have killed some 1,000 people by the end of this year, says a report based on the record of the first half of 2017 as well as the past years’ counts.


So far this year, police forces in the United States have shot 492 people dead, The Washington Post reported on Saturday.


The death toll on June 16 this year is identical to last year's tally, said the report, speculating that American police will tread the same path.

"These numbers show us that officer-involved shootings are constant over time," Geoffrey Alpert, a criminologist at the University of South Carolina, told the Post, which has been tracking US police fatal shootings since 2015. "Some places go up, some go down, but its averaging out. This is our society in the 21st century."

The tracking project, which began after the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014, has so far found twice as many police shootings than those recorded by the FBI.

In November 2014, a predominantly white grand jury -- of nine white and three black judges -- decided not to indict a white officer named Darren Wilson for killing Brown (pictured above), causing months of unrest across the country.

Twenty-five people have been injured at a night club in the US state of Arkansas during a potential gang fight shooing.


Two of the injured were said to be in critical condition following the attack in Little Rock on Saturday.
Authorities immediately ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.


"I want to reassure our public that this was not an act of terrorism but a tragedy... It does not appear to be a planned shooting," Mayor Mark Stodola said at a press conference, adding that all of the victims were expected to survive.




The existence of "rivalries and weapons" led to a fight between patrons from two different cities and triggered the shooting, Stodola said.
"We have no reason to believe at this time that anyone in the general public is at harm of any incident," he stated.
‘Senseless tragedy’

According to police chief Kenton Buckner, members with the headliner group initially wanted to enter the club but were stopped by police. Later they apparently managed to gain access to the club via a different entry way.

"I think when you have a concert venue where you have young people and force these two cities into a small room and some kind of dispute ensues, it was a recipe for disaster," Stodola said. "My heart is broken this morning -- my prayers are with the victims of this tragedy.”


US police officers fatally shot nearly 1,000 people last year, amounting to three deaths each day, according to an investigation by the Washington Post. A disproportionate number of those killed in 2016 were black, and about a quarter involved a victim who had a mental illness.




"We must do more to keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people. And government can do something to help us with that," the mayor noted.

It is estimated that there are between 270 million and 300 million guns in the US, about one per person.

According to a statement by Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, "Little Rock's crime problem appears to be intensifying," decrying "this senseless violent tragedy."

US President Donald Trump has decided to send federal troops to Chicago to help fight street violence and drug trafficking.


“We are foundationally changing the way we fight crime in Chicago,” Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement on Friday.


The statement came after Trump tweeted, “Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. 1714 shootings in Chicago this year!”


Authorities confirmed to The Chicago Sun-Times on Thursday that about 20 additional agents with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been sent to the city.


The new agents will join the state police and local detectives to create what will be called the “Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force.”


Shortly after taking office in January, the president tweeted that if city of Chicago did not fix the “carnage,” he would send in federal aid.


“If Chicago doesn't fix the horrible "carnage" going on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016), I will send in the Feds!” he wrote.


Though the Chicago government and the city police have implemented a series of security measures, including beefing up the police force and buying back guns, not much has improved.


According to data from the Chicago Police Department, 762 people became victims of gun violence in 2016, a staggering statistic that represents the largest spike in decades.

No, we don't need them. In 2013, there were nearly 35,000 gun deaths in the US. Let that number sink in. I agree they're here to stay thanks to the GOP being beholden to the NRA but we do not need them. They were designed for war and hunting, hunting is now a sport not a way to survive and war is war, let the soldiers have the guns.

The officer was not injured.

According to Glendale police, the suspect suffered life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead.
