    Social Etiquette
Going out for dinner with 2 people.

One a friend, the other unknown.

    Not a heavy eater.

Should one just pay for what one consumes + 30% OR

    Go 1/3 on the total bill + 30% ?

Go 1/3 on the bill. I'm not a heavy eater either but the times I've sat there while others have tried to divvy up the bill have been mortifying. If you're a drinker, get those in so you don't feel ripped off and kind of make up for the lack of food but either way, just pay 1/3 and walk away smiling. If you don't, it's going to grate on you that they think you're a tight arse, etc.

ETA - Unless one of the others turns out to be the divvying type. Then you just sit back and smile while you pay the least amount. But please don't initiate that xo

I would leave the decision to your friend. See where his loyalty lies, with you or the new guy or both. Enjoy the meal!

You're gonna get screwed when you order a salad and the other two order steak and lobster.

You can tell the waiter when ordering to split the bill. Who cares if somebody you don't even know thinks you are cheap?

It's not so much that, but being able to adjust to any situation is a good social skill to have. You don't want to be the guy who just doesn't get it.

Suck it up, pay 1/3, enjoy your meal. Just like scoring a TD, act like you've been there.

If you're short on cash, just know that the money will come back around. You won't die.

Being "cheap" isn't just about shaving a few bucks here and there -- it's a frame of mind, and a bad one.

                      LOL

The bill is the responsibility of your friend since he is the common denominator. I would just throw down $20 or $40 cash or whatever you figure handles your part incl tip - leave the rest to him

Anybody that has ever worked in a restaurant knows that it is the deepest pockets that generally are the cheapest MF when the bill comes

                                Friend picked up the tab.

                                Appreciate the varying inputs!

In social circles, not many are sports bettors.

Sports betting is viewed stereotypically and (outside of SBR) the conversation is nil.

As for tipping it used to be 15%, but now I think it's 30%.

All in all, not a bad time, although I prefer working on PRs (Power Ratings), Value and ATS numbers at my PC.

In what world do people really normally tip 30%? I give about 15% typically, unless the server is really good. 30% is about the tops.

If you tip 15% then you're in line. Tip 20-25% (as I normally do) then you're a good guy. Tip 30% only if the service was above and beyond or you know the server well.
