#4Like I said in one of the threads... my good friend is a cop. He actually was co-owner of a business that was netting 120k a year. So he was making 60k a year. He told me he hated business. Needed another passion in life. Always wanted to be a cop. I think he spent 3 years with schooling and academy??? Luckily he didn't have to start as a Detroit cop. But the city he works for.... I can't see him making anything more than 40k a year. But he told me it's much greater than he even thought? I don't know exactly what that means... but... in 2 years of being a cop... he's already smashed his squad car twice. Once totaled it. Been to the hospital ER 3 times... luckily still alive. Been in 30+ run downs... hopping fences etc. He said he loves the rush it gives him.
I agree... adrenaline is something unique... but how can you keep it up for your entire 8 hour shift?
I myself always wanted to be a Michigan State trooper. I basically told myself go fuk yourself. You aren't doing it. I listened.Comment -

#7Of all the police that are hired in America, how many of them actually have people skills? Im speaking about interaction with the public. How many of them actually enjoy working with the public? How about defusing tensions without automatically reaching for the first available weapon on his/her duty belt? Would like to see some real stats on these questions.Comment -

#9so whats the point of this? they should make more or less for dealing with people with bad attitudes?
also if someone doesnt listen to you and you have a badge and a gun you would be pretty jumpy and nervous if the person wasnt complying or being argumentativeComment -

#10Why would you be nervous or jumpy, if thats the case you are not qualified for the position. Policing involves interacting with the public. If you dont care to interact with people, only chose the position because you can get even with those that picked on you, this is not for you. The cop/s that respond to a call or situation, your best "weapon" would your ability to talk with people, gain their trust ect ect. Unfortunately police are not trained in that fashion. Hence why a vast majority of American citizens do not trust police. All of this adds up in the end.Comment -

#13To the OP, pay and benefits vary greatly in this profession. San Francisco PD starts out paying the 80K range. There are some ghetto, impoverished cities and suburbs that start out paying in 20K range. It's all greatly dependent on locale.Comment -

#15thankless job, after long periods on the force would be tough I would think not to be hardened by the job. Death, Violence and dealing with a public who is unappreciative 95% of the time, always dealing with other peoples problems, you can do 19 of 20 things right but the 20th thing causes you misery for you internally but also for negatively affecting the person or public you did wrong so it looks bad on you and the force.
Cops might not like other cops or even their partners they work with daily and throw in the fact being on edge because at any time you can be randomly targeted by the public like when I was in Vegas a couple years ago and a guy randomly walked into a pizza joint and asked a cop for the time and shot them both in the head ...etc... Money isnt much different but firefighting seems like a safer career both physically and mentally.Comment -

#22Nassau n Suffolk police long island NY are supposedly the top pay n benefits in the usa. The pension for Nassau police is 20 years and half pay still. Many other police depth have adjusted the pension age to 22.5 or 25 yrs on the job. When you take the pay and tremendous benefits and suburbs..defiantly better then nycity..it's a great job.Comment
