Found rubbing some sensodyne toothpaste a couple of times on affected tooth seems to numb it for long enough to get some sleep...

I just usually keep a piece of food lodged in the cavity. Pain subsides.

Try salt and water will help some

+ 1 tablespoon of baking soda mix it with salt & water. Hold it in your mouth for at least 10 min. and your ache is as good as gone.

I always laughed... my dentist charges more for a filling... but hardly anything for a tooth extraction.
