Either way Kraken, making comparisons to a full-scaled world war, and trying to eradicate random terrorist groups is also like comparing apples to heroin, as you've coined. When you are legitimately at war, where it's do-or-die, you protect your country as best you can no matter what that takes. That's all you do. Nothing else. Everyone else besides us and our allies can get fukked, we do not care what horrible things happen to they and their people, we are in protection-above-all mode. We didn't just now all of a sudden "learn how to be ethical". We handled it rashly back then, I know that, but it won it for us, and ended a terrible war. There is no guarantee, none whatsoever that other methods would have worked out just as well. We will never know. So we need to stop pretending like we do.
