Syria and Russia go way back. Russia supports its friends and old alliances. The US has been Fing with Russia with the Ukrainian coup and Putin has a chance to show up the US and show them how things get done. And he's going to do it. They had better stop Fing with Putin because he is way smarter than we are and he doesn't mind showing it.
He doesn't want any of this bleeding over into the Russia where they have some problems with Muslim radicals.

We can't beat the Taliban. Sure as hell aren't going to beat Russia.
But the thing is, if you want to get rid of Assad, you have to go in there and invade. You can't do it with jihadists. They should have known Putin would enter the fray. They miscalculated.

Yes. It doesn't matter. These are proxy wars. You are only as good as your proxy. One sides gets weapons. The other side gets weapons. They fight to a draw. If you are trying to take out a govt, the govt wins the draw.

Assad asks for Russia's help and in the space of a week, Russia removes more Islamic State terrorists and their bases than the US had supposed to have done in a year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken out against the accusations in Western media, claiming that they are part of an information war against Russia.“Other nations have been bombing Syrian territory for over a year,” Putin told the Russian human rights council on Thursday. He emphasized that a U.S.-led coalition had started its own airstrikes without an invitation from Syria nor a mandate from the United Nations.
“We have such an invitation and we intend to fight against terrorist organizations and them only,” Putin added.
Regarding the reports of civilian casualties, Putin claimed that they could not possibly have been caused by Russian planes.“As for media reports claiming that the civilian population is suffering, we are prepared for such information attacks. The first reports about civilian casualties emerged even before our planes got in the air,” he said.
