Sentiment remains. There is a double standard in how we view violence. I get the reaction here, this was every persons grandma. But when there is violence against black people, when they're the victims, the conversation quickly shifts from them being victimized to an argument that ultimately states in a non-direct way, they deserved what happened or had it coming. It's never black and white when the victim is black. There's always an asterisk that states "victim deserved to be victimized".

But now, everyone is all up in arms because it was a little old white lady and not a young black male. When in reality what happens to the young black men is much worse than what happened to this grandma.

Again, I DO NOT condone what they did. But she'll be fine. She didn't get shot, or choked to death, she doesn't have a record now, no jail time served, she didn't get put in a patty wagon and suffocate to death. She got a black eye. And look at the predictable outrage.

There's no excuse for this kinda crap; giving people a pass because someone's ancestors may have treated their ancestors unkindly is absurd.

When you make excuses for people based solely on their race, there's a word for it: racism Not that there aren't some striking examples of it in this thread, but similar to the situation itself, you're not going to fix a wrong behavior by copying it.

I agree with everything you said. I'm not giving any passes and I think my last post probably clarifies more what i was getting at initially and that's the double standard that exists in how we react to victims of assault.

Didn't assume you meant slavery, just the first thing that came to mind when considering rights that were violated back then.

Without those laws in place, people and businesses would be free to refuse service to anyone...i'd go out on a limb and say not many businesses would. For example:if a local diner refuses to serve black folks, which doesn't reduce the demand of black folks wanting to eat at diners. Opportunity arises for someone to open a more inclusive diner, and someone will capitalize on this. The first diner's owner has every right to cater to whatever customers he wants, even if it's bad business...but his loss is someone else's gain. You don't have the right to be served by someone against their will, but in even the semi-free market we have today, you don't have to worry about it for long; someone will happily provide you with the services you want...money talks. Same thing applies to all other forms of private enterprise; if someone foolishly rejects you and your money, you can bet someone else will step up to take it.

For public schooling or other government-funded institutions, the way they're currently administered, discrimination can't be permitted...public services paid for by all should show no preference in providing their services. Much harder to police that than it is for private businesses to be policed by the markets, and that's just one of the reasons public funding of these things isn't wise.

I think we are coming at it from two different perspectives perhaps, also again thinking about two different things. Im born and raised in the south. Im wasnt thinking about if "having a right" to do as you said was implemented today, I was thinking along the lines of it being that way, the way it practically was already, Im thinking Jim Crow. But to use that way of thinking today, I still think inevitably it wouldnt work and feel the way youre talking about is in implementation, always have been to a degree and always will be. Its not just a matter of the 3 things I mentioned. It would be a way of life as it already was, at least where Im from. I dont think whites here would have cared too much about capitalizing off of blacks by catering to their dining fancies, they could have did that back then, didnt happen. Anyway, dont mean to ramble.
