Anybody else watch these "survival" reality shows?

What are you going to pick for your survival gear? When they can't start fire for days - wtf - lousy tinder - why don't they just cut some hair off - that's got to go poof - right?

For fish - nobody dams anything up like a beaver - monkeys in trees - man have something to chop the mfs down and give me some kind of bat - bob and weave and nail the little schmucks - maybe it will even stun them when they hit the ground?

What's your tactics?

One of the best items I've seen somebody take was a mosquito net.

During the night it kept the mosquitos out. During the day they used it as a fishing net and actually caught fish with it.

It probably has many other uses as well.

has to be the best item you could take, especially now since they allow the
flints, which basically are caveman lighters... it doesnt take much skill or creativity
so yeah the mosquito net would get instant results, the psychological factor of not
having 50 dif bites on you from 5 dif type of bugs is critical in my opinion over a 3 week stretch
Plus hunting for food is always 50 50 at best.... but fishing has way better odds of succeeding at
as well as a great meat source to keep you from starving, and that net would really increase the chance
at successfully living off of fish... even if you fail at most other food sources or do not have it in you
to eat a larva,cockroach,worm... or what not

Yep, They used to only be allowed 1 item, so it was usually 1 person with a machete of sorts and 1 person would bring a fire starter.


Machete seems to be a must and certainly a fire starter if you can't do a friction fire. But if you're given those 2 things, then a mosquito net is fantastic. Never saw that before the Naked and Afraid XL, and really never thought of it. But I'm still going with a Machete as the number 1 tool/item.

Laura Zerra is a major babe on that show. She was on the first season and she made these bamboo fish traps and put them in the ocean and ended up catching 2 lobsters.

If I was picking 3 things I'd pick mosquito net, machete, and a fire starter.

Machete lets you build the shelter. Mosquito net lets you sleep comfortably. Fire starter keeps you warm.

The only thing I'd have to construct or find would be a container that could hold water. I would hollow out some bamboo and use it to drink or make my own cups with the wood I chopped.

I think it'd be fun to go on one of these shows. Discovery lets you send in your own casting tape I might try it. I would tell them that I have no experience in the woods and it would make for good TV to show that. Most of the people they pick for Naked and Afraid have wilderness backgrounds.

I do think it's bogus that the producers help the contestants when they need it. Honora said that they give the cast snacks, vitamins, etc. Hurts the authenticity of the show.

Bear Gryllis was fake too. I think Les Stroud is the only guy to truly do a survivor show and be filming by himself.
