1) It's psychological: Some people are very insecure/uncomfortable posting a regular pic of themselves b/c then the criticism they may potentially receive -- not cute enough, etc. -- becomes *very real* to them... and they can't quite handle it. (The real physical "them" is being criticized, and it hurts). They know they have to post some sort of pic to get any responses, so by posting a 'funny, goofball' pic, they hope to receive the attention they desire from those curious to know/see more and are at least somewhat intrigued/attracted to them. Anybody that criticizes them can be easily dismissed as haters (psychologically in their minds) who don't get the joke or are making pejorative judgments not on the "real" them, just the goofball pic of them.

I met the mother of my child on this site 7 years ago and it's female-oriented. A normal looking guy rarely gets responses and a woman that's butt ugly can get a ton of responses. When you're looking for someone, it kind of makes you sick. Women think they own the site and they aren't what they proclaim to be. The ones that want a nice gentleman, don't want that.
