    Question?
I am in the beginning stages of renovating my condo.
It's 30 years old, and I'm replacing everything original that hasn't been replaced yet.

All kitchen cabinets, new range, gutting the secondary bathroom, renovating the 2 room basement.....

So. I'm interviewing this hot shot 35 year expericenced builder yesterday, I tell him what I need done, yadda yadda yadda

Final question which pissed him off and terminated talks was "what Connecticut licenses and certificates do you have"

I'm sorry, but if I am spening 30 to 40 thousand dollars on a major job, and I mean major job, I think that is a very relevant question.

Or am I out of line?

Well, if he got pissed off just because you asked him for credentials I'd be willing to wager that he was one of those "independent contractors" and those guys are usually shysters to begin with...not to mention all of the scams going on in the "home improvement" industry...where you pay these dudes upfront for said work, and then they bail on you halfway through the job leaving you with a lot of cleanup and fixing to do and also leaving you in massive debt at the same time!..

always deal with licensed contractors when doing major work. do your homework upfront.

currently in process of gutting a big house to be converted into an educational/life skills facility for at risk kids and have a great guy helping me with some of the major electrical work.

I learned the hard way to only hire licensed contractors. Even better if you get a referral from a friend who has used them in the past. I had a 50k project turn into 150k and lost a good friend over it. Not worth it.

Totally in line Nasher. I'd even drive over to check out his references if you get the time. See his work personally and ask around to see if he was on time and on budget. It's your money...expect your standards

Even if he didn't have any certs or anything like that he shouldn't react like a bitch

The right answer is giving you plenty of references or saying come check out this some of my work and talk to this person and that person, etc

It's your money and your place, choose who you want no matter the reason

I would google the company/guy you choose and do your research....Also ask around

Well, the person who recommended me to him I said is he LLC.

Last thing I said to the builder was "Listen, sorry if I offended you and all, but it's business, nothing personal"

(first time in my life I got to use that famous line)

This is why I always buy new. Only lived in two places...but the next house will also be new. The special project around the house/renovation beats me down.

Market sucks, I can only get 0.75 on my dollar if I sell now, I'd take a 60k loss.
No choice, refurbish now, get the place up to 2015 current, instead of 1990, when the market rebounds I can get fair value, right now I take a 60-65k hit if I sell, put 35k into it, I'll recover that 35 and probably 10 k more.

                                    Only option that makes sense.
Plus I'm going to convert the basement into a nice two room apartment,

I'm thinking you dodged a bullet here. You're better off not using someone who acted bothered when you made a legitimate request for his credentials.
