#14Oklahoma is a shitty place to live, weather wise.
Other than that, it's a great place to live for certain people. I remember downtown OKC when the biggest draws were 1.) Spaghetti Warehouse 2.) The U-Haul storage building with the rotating U-Haul truck on top of it (Lights on the rotating truck were always on) and 3.) The Myriad Gardens. There was no "riverwalk", no Bricktown Ballpark, no Harkins Movie Theatre, no bowling alley, no Bass Pro, no kayaking or boathouse, no KD's or Toby Keith's or OKC Thunder. It was a place residents were scared to visit, nothing to do, lot of homeless people, drugs, muggings and some murders.
In the late 80's, early 90's, OKC had a mayor (Mayor Norick) that had a vision to rebuild and revitalize downtown OKC, it was called MAPS. OKC residents voted on it and it passed, it was a 1cent sales tax. I think now OKC is on MAPS 3 or MAPS 4 because they've all been so successful. Without MAPS there would be no OKC Thunder, no Devon Tower, nothing. It would be just another shitty city like Los Angeles.Comment -

#16Absolutely correct. Guys like Mcclendon, Tom Ward, Clay Bennet and so many others chose to stay in Oklahoma and invest in the state.
Probably the two main reasons Oklahoma is where it's at today. But they're certainly not exclusive of each other. Mayor Norick knew that he had to improve the city of OKC for a multitude of reasons, not the least was to attract bigger corps. Now OKC has Devon, Chesapeake, Sand Ridge, Dell, Boeing, others that escape me.

#17As a Tulsa resident, and former Norman resident while in college, OKC has come a long way.
As for tornadoes, the worst always seem fire up in central Oklahoma and then fizzle before they hit Tulsa in the evening.
It was that way 10 years ago when I lived in Norman too.
I lived on the north side of town off of I-35 about 10 minutes from where the Moore tornado hit that had the fastest winds ever recorded on earth at over 300 mph...that was the 99 twister I believe.
