I tried to convince her of that before I bought it. Upgrade later in life - she said no - the ring you buy me will be the ring I want to wear my whole life - it represents blah blah blah. I saved e-mail. Only way we upgrade is if she loses it and insurance buys us a new one.

Damn I hope you guys who paid high 4 and 5 figs got some big rocks. In any decent sized town there is a jewelery district with wholesalers that will give you way better prices than retail.

Luckily for me LA has a huge diamond district and I know a Lebanese guy who cuts great deals. Got a 2c stone surrounded by 1c of small stuff on a platinum band for $3300 and since 2 bands are the new thing (of course, f'n women think one band isn't enough) got 2 1c platinum bands for $2.2k.

Infinitely more lucky for me is that I decided to ask her early 2011 and withdrew about 75% of my roll from full tilt poker to cover the ring and other wedding crap. We all know how that story ended with FTP.
