I'm never quite sure how to take it when people call me pal. 'pal' seems kind of unfriendly to me. Only really gets used in Australia in the context of "fukk off pal"... as in 'go away you nobody'.

But I guess up there it's more like the way we use mate down here. Can be friendly, or not, based on tone and context.
