cashews it'll probably work, but may overheat. The danger of fire is small and of explosion is negligible. I wouldn't hesitate to use such an adapter in an emergency/short-term situation, though I'd keep checking it for overheating and would avoid stressful activities (eg, gaming, where you hear the CPU fan revving up.)

Every laptop computer has at least two batteries--a removable one that you charge through a power supply and then discharge when your laptop is in use without being plugged into a power supply, and one attached to the laptop motherboard that maintains the CMOS settings when your laptop is not connected to any power supply and is turned off.

I'm not a hardware guy, but my feeling as that your internal battery is going bye-bye. Might be looking at a motherboard replacement.
