Ok, it was a #1 song in the U.K. but only reached #73 in the U.S. and got limited airplay most likely due to it's sensitive nature. This may explain why I never heard it. If it didn't get much replay on through the 80's, I definitely wouldn't have heard it.

I listened to more alternative radio back then and it got more than limited play on those stations. So I guess I was under the impressions that it was a bigger hit than it was as I rarely listened to mainstream stations. So I guess you can call it an "alternative hit" in US.
