Internet Speed - How Important Is The Ping?
I just changed internet providers today. This one provider had a special for 15mbps at $30.00 so I gave them a shot. Come to find out... the ping is higher than my previous provider. To be honest... I don't feel like it's fast at all. To me it's the same. Here are some stats.

    New Provider

    Ping: 44ms

    Download: 15.90mbps

    Upload: 0.73mpbs

    Former Provider

    Ping: 8ms

    Download: 3.43mbps

    Upload: 0.73mbps

A told one of my friends who's a computer tech that I'm getting a ping of 8ms and he said get the fuk out of here. I said seriously... I am. Is that good? He said that number is amazing. But honestly... I felt faster at a cheaper price with my former provider.

Apparently the ping is more important than the speed? I don't know? How's the internet speed that you guys are on?

High latency can adversely affect interactive applications such as on-line real-time gaming. High latency is usually caused by Internet routing and/or congestion issues. There's usually not much you can do about such issues other than complaining or even switching service providers.

The time taken for the information to get from your computer, to the server and back to your computer is the amount of latency that you have. Lower ping is better than higher ping because it means that you will send information and receive the server's response back quicker.

44ms is not that bad, but still check with your new provider on why you're getting this number

give me a link to the plan that you bought, I wanna check something there
your upload speed didn't change at all with a new provider and it's kinda strange

also, did you change an actual router when you switched providers?

It's not that simple. You can't just tell me a ping number. What are you pinging? If you are trying to ping Google's DNS server with your old ISP and with your new ISP for example, the route will be different and so will the number. If you did a TRACERT command, you would notice this. There is other factors such as bandwidth use from other customers in the area, etc as well. A PING uses ICMP packets and it's the time it takes to send that packet somewhere and receive a reply back, just so you know.

basically the time it takes to communicate. lower the ping the better (less interrupted traffic).

Ping is basically everything for gaming.

Ping would be relative in gaming I suppose since it would measure how fast you are connecting to the game's server. Bandwidth still matters though. I don't know if you changed anything but your speed would be slower if you were now connected wirelessly compared to a hard wired connection.

You're right. I should rephrase that.

Online multiplayer is where Ping is crucial. It's the foremost cause of lag, IMO. Relative to the other things.

Yeah I usually only associate ping when I'm playing online video games.
