When you heat snow mixed with Styrofoam, or plastic, or pollutants, it could very well smell and turn black.

Replicate it yourself. Go turn some snow into black (if it works for you) - take it to a lab, get them to break it down for you.

That's what I'd do if I thought there was something nefarious at play here.

The black is soot from the lighter's flame, that isn't unusual. The water crystals are so fine that they are evaporating from the heat.

I don't know why I even bothered to do this, but I went outside and grabbed handful of snow and used a long lighter I have for lighting pilot lights and I got the exact same effect as the people in those videos, some black soot and no water dripping. As soon as I squeezed the snow tightly, water dripped from it just like I thought that it would.
