    Former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition in a coma after hitting his head while skiing in the French Alps, the hospital treating him says. The 44-year-old German "was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation," the hospital said in a statement. French media, citing a medical source, reported that Schumacher had suffered a brain haemorrhage. The director of the French resort of Meribel earlier said Schumacher had been wearing a helmet while skiing off-piste with his son, 14, and was conscious "but very agitated" during the transport to the hospital. Schumacher, who retired last year, is F1's most decorated champion, with a record 91 grand prix wins.
