Because I've met "blacks" from the Dominican and other places who find it very offensive to be called African-American, because they have no immediate or recent lineage to Africa.

There was a black student in a class of mine two semesters ago who stated "I don't call you European-American, why am I an African-American, I am an American, plain and simple"
