A satirical news website has made fools out of millions on the internet with a fake story saying 37 deaths occurred from overdoses on the first day of Colorado’s new legal recreational marijuana laws.
“Marijuana Overdoses Kill 37 in Colorado On First Day of Legalization,” read the headline of theDaily Currant‘s fake news story that ran on Jan. 2. Much like the Onion, the Daily Currant publishes fictional news pieces for comedic intent.
The humor was lost on both sides of the legal cannabis debate, as drug war enthusiasts used the headline as ammo to further their anti-legalization agenda, while marijuana advocates chided the site for spreading false information.
One user on the Currant‘s Facebook page went so far as to say that the site is “as dangerous as Fox News,” while an older gentleman believing the headline took to YouTube to voice his concerns.
The piece was clearly intended for satire, as the story quotes a fictional doctor from the television series Lost as a source, and lists Jesse Pinkman, a character from the television series Breaking Bad, as one of the victims.
The story has received over one million shares on Facebook so far, thus marking the further decline of western civilization.
