First of all, let me say that I agree with you 100% and hear what you are saying loud and clear...Having said that, MLB has been like this since the inception of the game!...I don't get all of the bitchin', complainin' and belly-aching...Human error or the human element of calling balls and strikes has always been a part of the game albeit sometimes very controversial...and what makes it more frustrating is what all of us baseball fans have known for decades is the fact that each and every umpire has his own strike zone and/or interpretation of it...Furthermore, a lot of times it's not even about if the pitched ball was a strike or not, but whether it hits the target (i.e. the catchers mitt)...simply put, the majority of the time the umpire will give the pitcher the benefit of the doubt if he hits his target...Greg Maddux also used to get very similar calls on outside, inside, high and low balls because catcher Charlie O'Brien was a master of framing pitches and stealing strikes for his pitchers on what should have been ball calls.

I understand your POV as this is the history of the game. I guess I would like to see a scenario like the ATP. Where we still have umps, but players can call up to however many challenges the league allows them to, for reviewing it through a strike zone sensor. I mean they challenge & replay outs why not balls & strikes as well ?

Would you guys rather have a "robot" ump instead of the human ump variance? While it would improve some things from a statistics side, It does so for the book as well making the lines sharper (imho). I like the idea of a robot ump from a data perspective, I think it improves the accuracy of pitching data, but the fan in me still kind of likes the Human variance.

I haven't been big into MLB the last few years, so I'm not up on how bad it really is with some of the umps getting older.

I don't think it would work, BTJ...the game would take too damn long...every other pitch would be contested....and the game would drag on and on...and then all of us would be bitchin' about the game being too slow, taking too long, boring, etc...I would seriously consider re-training these umpires and tell them to enforce the old school strike zone...basically anything from the knees to the letters is a strike...Having said that, I'm all for a strike zone sensor just as long as it's calibrated correctly and the game moves on quickly and smoothly without any unnecessary drama or problems...and all players and managers agree to go by the strike zone sensor call without arguing...then, I would be willing to give that a shot.

Just like I told BTJ, if the game moves along smoothly and without interruption, and both players and managers agree with the robot calls (assuming it's calibrated accurately) then I would be willing to give it a shot...

Nothing major, just a few minor issues that need cardiologist tweaking.
I'm off to see her now.
I like lady doctors.

Even better news, my resting heart rate is 72, normal.
Even though there are some that would like to see my resting heart rate at zero.
