But baseball does have a real problem, they need to do something to get a younger audience engaged. Even if it upsets the older fans (no clue your age, but I'm an older fan), the writing is on the wall. I would be alright making some concessions to get a younger audience into it.
The above being said, this lockout I just feel will absolutely kill MLB. Similar to the last time hockey locked out.
I could be completely wrong, the above is merely opinion and shouldn't in any shape/way/form be construed as fact.Comment -

I've written about this a couple of years ago.
I'll try to give you the short answer, bear in mind brevity was never my forte.
For reasons unknown MLB feels they don't need to market their young players, to which I say "are you kidding me"?
My dad's baseball that was true for several reasons, a) there weren't any alternate summer sports in the 50's and 60's.
That era didn't have other options today's kids have, like unlimited internet, and 1000 other things to do with their summer disposable time.
My dad and his pals went to the sandlots and played pickup games, and organized Little League five times a week.
Mickey Mantle, and Willy Mays, and Ted Williams, and the dozens of other mega, larger than life superstars sold themselves, and baseball as well.
MLB, I believe anyway, is still stuck in that mind set.
MLB is sitting on a gold mine, and yet they feel they don't have to sell us Mike Trout, and Ohtani, and de Grom, and Accuna Jr, and Tatis, and the rest.
Know this, these kids are electric and exciting to watch.
But... if you don't market them, tell us to watch just how exciting they are, it'll (and it is) go by the way side.
And the game doesn't need an overhaul.
You want to tinker with a pitch clock, OK, you want a universal DH, fine.
The extra innings rule is bullshit, the doubleheader rules are bullshit, eliminating the shift and all the other radical changes like the number playoff teams is bullshit, and if Manfred would open up his ears on the blockhead of his and listen to 'real' fans he'll know the majority of the fans don't like it, and as a result, don't like him.
A tinker here or there, fine, adjust the salary structure a tad for the better prospects (one of the few 'real' issues pending) OK, but ti shouldn't take a year to do that, hell, the original founders slapped together the Constitution in three months.
Market the game, market the stars, don't f*ck with the game, it doesn't need an overhaul.Comment -

#145095This is well stated nasher. At some point most of the old heads will be dead (not trying to be morbid, couldn't be helped), including me. At some point MLB has to have an influx of younger fans. I agree I don't _want_ the game tinkered with and I think overall most of the suggestions brought up to shorten games are incredibly dumb. I don't think actually shortening the games is the answer. If this was, why not just make every game 7 innings and play double headers all day everyday, it would shorten the season as well (not that this is a good idea, but if shortening games was the answer.......).Originally posted by stevenashI've written about this a couple of years ago.

I could see a case to be made to reduce the overall number of games played. 162 is a freakin lot. A shorter season would (IMHO) create a greater sense of urgency during the regular season for a series, not just in Sept.
I don't have the answers, at least not any good ones. Just having a lockout now is going to be catastrophic for baseball (MLB will still exist, but jesus this is a huge FU to a fanbase that's already dwindling), but that's just one opinion from a plaid wearing bearded man in the nordic hinterlands of IA.
